My wife - the amazing Spiderwoman March 17, 2006

So here’s an interesting tale involving my two year old daughter and my wife. Its kind of hard to give the full effect of this story unless you know my wife and my daughter, but the story is still funny nonetheless.

My daughter is full of energy. Very intelligent and curious. She’s two years old and already speaking English and Spanish. Asking questions and making demands is part of her daily regimen. It’s a safe assumption she got her strong will from her mother.

Her mother (my wife) is a very strong latin woman who amazes me everyday. This story is even more proof of that. You have to know my wife. She’s a petite Colombian woman who is pretty much not afraid of anything. There are of course exceptions to her fearlessness. But this story is still mind-boggling.

On some quick background about where we live, because our apartment/condo plays a part in this story as well. I know, I know…when am I going to get to the story? I’m just trying to lay the groundwork so you can get the “full” picture. Our apartment is is on the third floor of our complex. Its a nice place with a balcony out the back.

OK…so here’s the story as it happened two days ago.

My wife was out back on he balcony straightening things up. My daughter wanted to be with mommy, so she tried to open the glass door. She thought the locking lever was the “door knob” since most of our door knobs in the house are actually handles instead of knobs. So she proceeds to lock my wife out on the balcony. All this is happening while I’m at work.

Diana tried to get back inside, but found the door to be locked. *heart beating* She tried again, but to no avail. Luckily the day was rather nice (see we live in Seattle where it rains a lot). But my wife was rather paranoid now because it was a while before I got home from work, and she had something cooking in the oven, as well as a two year old loose on the house without supervision.

She tried to get Isabella to unlock the door. Makes perfect sense since she figured out how to lock it, maybe she could unlock it. But Isabella wasn’t having it because she was getting upset that she couldn’t get to her mommy.

Diana tried yelling for help, but either no one was home or couldn’t hear her. So she started thinking radically. She thought maybe she could jump down, but after looking at the distance she didn’t think that was too wise. Once again, she tried to get Isabella to unlock the door.

THINK! THINK!

After a little bit she looked around in our little storage closet on the balcony. Whats this? A rope?

Diana tied the rope to the balcony banister and repelled down three floors scaring the poor neighbor on the first floor who came out phone in hand asking “what are you doing??!!”. She told him that Isabella had locked her out on the balcony and she took off for the building office. Must have been a sight seeing this petite latin woman coming over the edge of his porch in her slippers.

They tried calling me at work, but I happened to be in a meeting. So the landlord had the lock drilled out. By this time I got out of my meeting and got the message to come home. When I got there the landlady had said my wife jumped from the third floor balcony.

What??

After the fact, we realized how dangerous it was. But we all laugh at it now. Its pretty funny and amazing all at once what my wife went through to get the house open to make sure Isabella and our house was ok. Simply amazing.

Just a great life story we will be telling for years.
