Ipad development

I haven’t updated much lately due to being heads down on a project at Yahoo. In the meantime, I’ve been able to learn a lot about what html5 and css3 can do for ipad development.

What I find to most helpful is the fact that I don’t have to focus on making a website work across ALL platforms. These really frees me from browser hacks that can bulk up the code. CSS3 is amazing. I still can’t get over how cool some of the effects and animation are. The animations run way smoother than traditional javascript animation. Of course I use javascript to trigger most of the animations but the css does most of the heavy lifting.

I’ve developed several mootools libraries to work with the ipad. The main library I’ve put a lot of effort in is called MaxiPad. Funny name, but it is an ipad event engine. It can detect taps, double-taps, long touches, flicks (up, down, left, right) and can do multitouch events like rotation (clockwise and counter-clockwise). I’ve even got it emulating multi-touch on a desktop browser as well (however, not without some bugs…still working on that). Another library I’ve developed is a transition manager which is loosely based on the apple safari demos.

I’m working on setting up my website mootools javascript experiments page with all the new stuff I’ve come up with. Still trying to rescue old experiments off my failed harddrive from my previous server, but I’m not going to let that stop me from putting up new things.

So thats the state of things. Kind of slow on the web updates, but there are just a lot of exciting things going on.
